Lily Hanbury
(1875-1908), ActressSitter in 26 portraits
Actress, educated in London, she was the sister of actress Hilda Hanbury and cousin of Julia Neilson, also an actress. Hanbury made her first appearance on the stage in W.S. Gilbert's Pygmalion and Galatea at the Savoy Theatre in 1888. Her extensive repertory included, 'Countess Wintersen' in The Stranger; 'Hetty Preene' in G. R. Sims's Lights o' London; and 'Petra' in Ibsen's Enemy of the People. She achieved great success playing various roles in Shakespearian plays under the management of Wilson Barrett and Beerbohm Tree.
