A painting by H. W. Pickersgill is at Chetham's Hospital and Library, Manchester (now cut down), exhibited RA, 1841 (10), reproduced S. M. Ellis, William Harrison Ainsworth and his Friends, I, facing 416; a painting called Ainsworth by J. E. Williams of 1862 was in the collection of W. Oraz, 1935; a drawing by Count A. D'Orsay is in the collection of Ray Murphy, ex-Phillipps collection, Sotheby's, 13 February 1950 (lot 215), lithographed by R. J. Lane (example in NPG), presumably the drawing engraved for Ainsworth's Magazine, VII (1845), frontispiece; a drawing and a woodcut by G. Cruikshank are in the British Museum; a miniature by S. J. Stump (as a young man) was in the collection of Captain Swanson, reproduced Ellis, I, frontispiece; a miniature by F. Freeman of 1826 (painted at Bath) is reproduced Ellis, I, facing 98; Ainsworth appears in 'Our Library Table', etching by G. Cruikshank, published Ainsworth's Magazine, I (1842), 115, 186 and 256, reproduced Ellis, II, facing 16; and in 'Sir Lionel Flamstead and his Friends', etching by G. Cruikshank (example in Victoria and Albert Museum); an engraving by R. J. Lane, after W. Greatbach, was published R. Bentley, 1839 (example in British Museum), reproduced Ellis, I, facing 350.
