Engraving by W. Faithorne, bust, own hair, with breastplate and drape, set on a pedestal within an alcove; on 12 July 1656 Ashmole ‘paid Mr Fathorne for Engraving my Picture’ (C. H. Josten, Elias Ashmole, Biographical Introduction and Texts, 1966, I, p 114, pl.x, ii, p 692; Ashmole, Treatise on the Philosopher’s Stone, 1758, front., see R. J. Gunter ed., The Diary and Will of Elias Ashmole, 1927, p 61n1). L. Fagan, Faithorne, 1888, p 19, was in error in saying it appeared as the front. to the Theatrum Chemicum Britannnicum 1652.

Drawing by Peter Lely, Two Heralds from the Procession of the Order of the Garter (formerly in the Kupferstichkabinett, Berlin, 12807), showed ‘almost certainly’ Ashmole with, possibly, William Ryley (Lely 1978, under no.103).

Painting by John Riley, three-quarter length standing, left hand on hip, the medal from the elector of Brandenberg round his waist, right hand resting on the upright folio History of the Order of the Garter; on a table, the cloth inscribed PRAEMIA HONORARIA, lie the King of Denmark’s chain and medal, a lesser George given Ashmole by the Earl Marshal, a gold box containing gold coins presented by Charles II, and the silver medal from the Elector Palatine, in a fine Grinling Gibbons frame; Ashmolean Museum, Oxford (F730), presented by the sitter 1683 (Mrs R.
