A companion to the bust of Squire Bancroft (see ‘BANCROFT, Sir Squire, All known portraits, In private character, Paintings, drawings, sculptures and prints, 1880’). According to the Garrick Club online catalogue, it is likely that the pair were commissioned to mark the Bancrofts’ first season at the Haymarket Theatre in 1880, and to be placed in the foyer.

The servant-girl part of Nan was one of Marie Bancroft’s best-known roles. Good for Nothing was revived to acclaim at the Prince of Wales’s Theatre in 1879, which is the date ascribed to these images. However, the inscriptions on several indicate that they may have been produced in 1881, when the play was staged at the Haymarket Theatre.

The boy who played the page was ‘lent’ to the Bancrofts for this production ‘by an owner of sugar plantations. He was called “Biafra” after the ship he came over in, and looked a picture in his laced scarlet coat, his white turban and gilt dog-collar [sic]’ (Bancroft & Bancroft 1909, pp.135–6).
