Tuer, Bartolozzi and his Works, 1882, I, p 5, listed ‘a fine portrait’ of Bartolozzi painted by Angelica Kauffmann, then with C. C. Fuller of London, later sold Robinson & Fisher, 15 October 1932, lot 32.

Drawing called Bartolozzi, medallion bust. Christie’s, 12 November 1968, lot 12, where identified as from the Molteno sale, 6 June 1817, lot 44, and said to have been described by Mrs Esdaile an ‘original portrait of Bartolozzi by himself’, but this may be questioned. A similar profile drawing called George Dance, sold Sotheby’s, 11 July 1990, lot 33.

R.A. and engraved in imitation of the Original Drawings by William Daniell, A.R.A., 1814); tracing by Daniell in the Yale Center for British Art (B1977.14.4188) with, verso, a reversed image in pencil.

Painting by Domenico Pellegrini, three-quarter length seated at table copying a painting from an easel. Venice, Accademia (illus. Le portrait en Italie, Petit Palais, Paris, 1982, no.39). Exhibited RA 1795 (196). A bust-length version was in a Milanese private collection in 1935. A related, crude, whole-length engraving by J. Romney 1817, is lettered G. M. Brighty del., and Drawn by Himself.

Drawing by Henry Edridge, three-quarter length seated, a snuff box in his hands. British Museum (1867.04.13.535). A second drawing by Edridge in the British Museum, bust-length to right, appears to show him older (1845.0818.5).

Portrait by William Artaud, three-quarter length seated, a porte-crayon in his right hand, exhibited RA 1803 (497). Engraved Pastorini & P. W. Tomkins.

Drawing by Giovanni Vendramini, bust-length oval, engraved E. Scriven 1832, the head comparing with that painted by Artaud in 1802. Vendramini was a pupil of Bartolozzi.

Painting by Roberto Focosi, half-length seated, a glass in his left hand, a burin in his right, engraved by L. Rados 1813. The plate, published soon after Bartolozzi’s death, shows him with a dark wig looking much younger than his years.

Doubtful Portraits
Bartolozzi has been tentatively identified in J. H. Mortimer’s Caricature Group. Drawing attributed to J. K. Sherwin in the Royal Collection (A. P. Oppé, English Drawings, Stuart and Georgian periods, in the Collection of His Majesty the King at Windsor Castle, 1950, no.588); caricature by Rowlandson (Yale Center for British Art, B1975.3.132; illus. P. Noon, English Portrait Drawings & Miniatures, 1979, p 71); a watercolour by Charles Ansell perhaps includes Bartolozzi (British Museum, 1890.05.12.5); miniature by Violet exhibited RA 1804 (692) showed Bartolozzi’s son, Gaetano; unattributed wash drawing of c.1795-1800 (NPG reference collection D608).
