Watercolour on paper, 300 x 200mm (sight), probably by William Coutts Keppel, 7th Earl of Albemarle, inscr. in pencil ‘“A ride to Khiva” 1880’, three-quarter-length, half-profile to right, mounted on horseback (horse not depicted), reins in left hand, whip in right hand, wearing Blues uniform and forage cap, cigarette in mouth; Household Cavalry M., London (inscr. verso AB 135) where currently exhibited as ‘Watercolour of Colonel Burnaby 1880 painted by the Earl of Albemarle’. Successive Earls of Albemarle were army officers like Burnaby. This informal but competent study of Burnaby as if ready for the parade-ground would seem to have been made by a fellow-officer. The 7th Earl (b. 1832) is a more likely candidate as artist than the 6th Earl (b. 1799) or the 8th (b. 1858).

Both works by Mortlock show Burnaby in the same aspect as photograph (a) by Thomas Fall (see below, ‘Photographs, before 1885’). According to a note on a photograph of the Knightsbridge oil, in 1913 the artist stated that this and a head-and-shoulders replica (i.e. the Windsor oil) were the only portraits she painted of him, and that the former was ‘painted just before he left for Egypt, & finished off after his death’; see NPG SB (Burnaby).

This image shares clothing features with the photograph by Austen above, but shows Burnaby hatless. It may have been drawn from an unlocated variant pose, or created from elements in the photographs by Austen and Gowie registered early in 1885.
