Unattributed painting, three-quarter-length in earl’s coronation robes, his coronet in right hand before him, sold from the Hanover collection, Sotheby’s, Schloss Marienburg, 2nd day, 6 October 2005, lot 407 as from the studio of Kneller.

Painting by Godfrey Kneller, three-quarter-length standing to right, in earl’s coronation robes, coronet in left hand, with coat of arms and motto (volo non valeo associated with the Greystock family) upper left, signed and dated. Sotheby’s, Summers Place, 2nd day, 15 September 1999, lot 920, from Cairnbulg (J. D. Stewart, Godfrey Kneller, 1983, no.132).

Painting by William Aikman, whole-length standing to right in coronation robes, holding earl’s coronet in left hand, a view of the central block of Castle Howard (completed 1706) to the right, inscribed with date. Castle Howard (Lord Hawkesbury, ‘Catalogue of the Portraits, Miniatures, &c, at Castle Howard, Yorkshire, and Naworth Castle, Cumberland’, Transactions of the East Riding Antiquarian Society, XI, 1904, p 39, no.551, illus. pl.XVII).
Four portraits called the 3rd Earl of Carlisle appeared in the Naworth Castle sale, Winter & Sons, Carlisle, 2nd day, 14 May 1947: lot 400 unattributed half-length in robes and wig; lot 401 unattributed three-quarter-length in blue coat; lot 402 by Dahl, half-length in red coat (cf. W. Nisser, Michael Dahl, 1927, cat. p 57, no.32), and lot 452 unattributed, when young, three-quarter-length with silk drapery over his arm.
