Unattributed painting, half-length oval, in armour, inscribed. Compton Wynyates (illus. E. Carpenter, The Protestant Bishop, 1956, f.p.98).

c.1675-80
Painting copied by (Thomas?) Stewart, half-length in rochet and chimere, wearing skullcap, own long dark hair, inscribed. Church Commissioners, London (formerly Fulham Palace). In 1794 Porteus, Bishop of London, had requested permission for Stewart to copy a portrait of Compton then belonging to Sion College (untraced in 1975).

Unattributed painting, whole-length seated wearing skullcap, rochet and chimere, right hand on chair arm, left hand on table. Castle Ashby. Exhibited First Special Exhibition of National Portraits ( ... ending with the reign of James the second), South Kensington, 1867, no.993 as by Riley. Engraved J. Posselwhite 1842 from a drawing by G. P. Harding as by Simon du Bois (Noble British Families). Version at Christ Church, Oxford (Mrs R. L. Poole, Catalogue of Portraits in the possession of the University, Colleges, City and County of Oxford, III, p 44, no.111 as ?Kneller; part illus. Historical Portraits, II, 1911, f.p.296), of which a copy by F. Smith of Oxford was made for Cuddesdon College by 1866 (Sir George Scharf's Sketch Books, 76:18a), reduced to a half-length in 1962.

A close variant of this type (with larger eyes and a slightly smiling mouth), engraved I. Beckett (J. Chaloner Smith, British Mezzotinto Portraits, 26). A chalk drawing attributed to Mary Beale, sold Christie’s, 18 June 1974, lot 62, relates to this engraving.

Hargrave, half-length seated to left in a high-backed chair wearing skullcap and rochet and chimere, inscribed aeta suae 78/Anno 1710, holding an elevation of St Paul’s inscribed Combustam inveni/Extructam reliqui. St Paul’s Cathedral Library (illus. J. Ingamells, The English Episcopal Portrait 1559-1835, catalogue, 1981). Variant engraved in reverse, J. Simon (J. Chaloner Smith, British Mezzotinto Portraits, 42), a medal of Charles I in his right hand.

Doubtful Portrait
Unattributed bust-length oval c.1650, long dark hair, inscribed. Private collection. The likeness does not entirely agree with the portrait at Compton Wynyates (see above under c.1650).
