John Dalton (1766-1844), Chemist and natural philosopher

Chemist, natural philosopher and a pioneer in the field of nuclear physics.

'The massive contour of Dalton's head impresses you with the stamp of intellectual power … His prominent eyebrows shaded the deep-set eyes of quick discernment, whilst the use of large spectacles added to his general philosophic seeming and force of character. In his marked nose, rather massive jaws, and firm deep chin, you saw the sturdy race of the "north countrie".' (Dr Lonsdale quoted by H. E. Roscoe, John Dalton, 1895, p 185).
