Early Victorian Portraits Catalogue

William Hilton (1786-1839), History painter

There is a self-portrait in the Usher Art Gallery, Lincoln, exhibited SKM, 1868 (349); the painting called Hilton by P. de Wint in the Graves Art Gallery, Sheffield, and the two so-called self-portraits sold at Christie's, 12 September 1941 (lots 46 and 47), probably represent the artist's father, himself an artist.

This extended catalogue entry is from the out-of-print National Portrait Gallery collection catalogue: Richard Ormond, Early Victorian Portraits, Her Majesty's Stationery Office, 1973, and is as published then.
