Painting by Joshua Reynolds. A. I. Dasent in 1896 (D. Mannings, Sir Joshua Reynolds, I, 2000, no.993). In a letter of 1 July 1896 to Lionel Cust (NPG archive) Arthur I. Dasent (author of the Irwin entry in DNB) said this portrait probably showed Alexander Irwin, but Reynolds’s sitter books have ‘Coll. Erwin’, indicating John Irwin.
