A painting by T. Phillips is listed in his 'Sitters Book' (copy of original MS, NPG archives), under 1816, exhibited RA, 1816 (136); also listed by Phillips is a painting of 1819, with Lyell's two brothers, Thomas and Henry, exhibited RA, 1819 (163), and a third painting of 1822; two busts by W. Theed (after J. Gibson, according to the Dictionary of National Biography) are in Westminster Abbey and the Royal Society, London; there is a painting by an unknown artist in the Geological Society, London; a lithograph by T. H. Maguire was published G. Ransome, 1852 (example in NPG), for 'Portraits of the Honorary Members of the Ipswich Museum'; a lithograph by W. H. Drummond, after J. M. Wright, was published T. McLean (example in British Museum), for 'Athenaeum Portraits'; there is an engraving by C. H. Jeens, another by F. Croll, published for Hoggs' Instructor (examples in NPG), and a third by J. Stodart, reproduced Mrs Lyell, The Lift, Letters and Journals of Sir Charles Lyell (1881), II, frontispiece, and a woodcut published ILN, XLVI (1865), 229, all after photographs (some examples of the original photographs are in the NPG); a lithograph by A. Newsam was published J. Mayall, Philadelphia (example in British Museum); there is an anonymous engraving (example in NPG), and a woodcut from an unidentified magazine (cutting in NPG).
