Johann Christoph Pepusch (John Christopher Pepusch) (1666 or 1667-1752), Composer and teacher

Musician; born in Berlin, came to London 1688; as a composer overshadowed by Handel but famous as a teacher of the science of harmony with many notable musicians among his pupils; Mus.Doc. Oxford, 1713; composed musical setting for The Beggar's Opera, 1727-28, first performed at Lincoln's Inn Fields Theatre where he was frequently employed after 1714; FRS, 1745; organist to the Charterhouse from 1737, where he lived and is buried.
