Mid-Georgian Portraits Catalogue

Richard Phelps (circa 1718-1785), Portrait painter

[Caveat: Richard Phelps (c.1720-71) diplomat and traveller]

1746?
Painting by Richard Phelps and C. W. Bampfylde (1720-91), signed by both artists, the latter on a grey hunter, the former as a groom with a bay hunter, at Hestercombe, Somerset, which Bampfylde inherited in 1750. Guy Morrison, London. The date was read as 1746, which seems too early; Bampfylde exhibited at the Society of Artists, London, and RA between 1763 and 1783.

1771
Drawing by Richard Phelps, see NPG 1797a.

1779
Drawing by Richard Phelps, half-length oval. Ashmolean Museum, Oxford (1472; D. B. Brown, Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, Catalogue of the Collection of Drawings, IV, The Earlier British Drawings, 1982, p 494). Looking slightly fuller in the face and less forbidding than in NPG 1797a.
