An oil self-portrait of 1840 is in the Aberdeen Art Gallery, and so is a painting by Phillip of himself and his wife; three other oil self-portraits are in the National Gallery of Scotland, the Scottish NPG, and the Glasgow Art Gallery, the last exhibited John Philip R.A., Aberdeen Art Gallery, 1967 (10), reproduced plate I; a drawing by R. Dadd as 'Glorious Jock' is in the British Museum, previously thought to be a self-portrait, and as such exhibited Aberdeen, 1967 (addenda), and Royal Academy Draughtsmen, British Museum, 1969 (29); another drawing by Dadd is in the collection of Capt. R. H. Dadd; a painting by H. O'Neil was exhibited RA, 1858 (424), and SKM, 1868 (599); a painting by E. Long was in the collection of Mrs Long, 1904; a painting by J. Ballantyne (showing Phillip in his studio) is in the Scottish NPG, exhibited RA, 1867 (487), and there is a chromo-lithograph of it by V. Brooks (example in the NPG); a painting by J. A. Houston is in the Royal Scottish Academy, and so is a painting by an unknown artist, apparently signed, 'B. N. D.'; a small painting by C. E. Cundall is in the Garrick Club, London, possibly identical with, or related to, the miniature by E. C. Cundell [sic], exhibited VE, 1892 (431); a drawing by C. Gow was in the collection of Mrs A. Dalziel, 1939; a marble bust by W. Brodie is in the Aberdeen Art Gallery, exhibited RA, 1868 (971); a plaster bust by J. Hutchison is in the Scottish NPG, presumably related to the bust exhibited RA, 1861 (1067); a bust by J. Thomas was exhibited RA, 1860 (1021); there are various woodcuts and engravings in the British Museum, and several photographs in the NPG; others are reproduced as woodcuts ILN, XXXV (1859), 543, and L (1867), 285, and Mrs E. M. Ward, Memories of Ninety Years (n.d.), facing p 280.
