Winthrop Mackworth Praed (1802-1839), Poet

According to a note by A. H. M. Praed, 1923 (NPG archives), there were two paintings of Praed by A. Mayer, one in the collection of Sir George Young of Formosa, the other owned by Sir Hedworth Meux; the former was exhibited SKM, 1868 (371), and was lithographed by M. Gauci (example in NPG), and by W. Drummond, published T. McLean, 1837 (example in NPG), for 'Athenaeum Portraits'; Drummond's lithograph is reproduced Selections from the Works of William Mackworth Praed, edited Sir G. Young (1866), frontispiece; Praed appears in the 'Billiard Room Group' by H. N. O'Neil in the Garrick Club, London; a painting by H. N. O'Neil was exhibited RA, 1868 (448); a marble bust by C. Smith was exhibited RA, 1841 (1313), possibly the marble bust in the collection of Mrs Praed, see Poems of William Mackworth Praed, with a memoir by Rev D. Coleridge (4th edition, c.1882), p LXI; an anonymous engraving (as a young man) is reproduced Poems (c.1882), frontispiece; a medallion by R. Smith is on Praed's tomb in Kensal Green Cemetery, London.
