John Baker Holroyd, 1st Earl of Sheffield (1735-1821), Statesman
Pastel by Thomas Hickey, whole-length standing before Roman ruins. Sheffield sale, Christie’s, 11 December 1909, lot 3, unattributed (but cf. G. P. Harding, List of Portraits in Various Mansions of the United Kingdom, I, p 9, as ‘Lord Sheffield in the uniform of the Royal Forresters Hickey’). If painted in Italy, as the Roman ruins might suggest, the portrait must be dated 1764-65 when Holroyd, Ridley (see below) and Hickey were together in Rome. Holroyd was a Cornet in the 21st Dragoons (Royal Forresters) from April 1760, and Captain from December 1761.

Portrait by John Smart. Sheffield Place c.1804 (G. P. Harding, List of Portraits in Various Mansions of the United Kingdom, I, p 9) with a companion piece of his first wife Abigail, the latter presumably the miniature dated 1769, sold Sotheby’s, 11 November 1993, lot 12.
