Painting by Godfrey Kneller, three-quarter-length standing, his right arm draped, his left hand inside his coat, inscribed Charles Townshend Viscount Townshend. Raynham (Prince Frederick Duleep Singh, Portraits in Norfolk Houses, II, p 227, no.19, illus. f.p.24). The cravat is longer than that in NPG 1363, which is otherwise closely comparable.

Painting ascribed to Dahl, three-quarter-length standing, wearing a loose robe, a temple beyond. Raynham, from Sotheby’s, 25 June 1941, lot 151. Exhibited Family and Friends, A Regional Survey of British Portraiture, 1992, no.35, illus. p 34. A watercolour copy of this type by G. P. Harding ‘from an Original picture at Sandwell’, sold Sotheby’s, 16 December 1982, lot 14/22; a second such copy, by T. Athow, is in the Ashmolean Museum (Sutherland collection, Burnet ii, 528).

Painting by Godfrey Kneller, three-quarter-length standing in viscount’s parliamentary robes, left hand on table edge. Houghton (A Capital Collection, Houghton Hall and the Hermitage, ed. L. Dukelskaya & A. Moore, 2002, p 316, no.219). Engravings by J. Simon c.1715 (J. Chaloner Smith, British Mezzotinto Portraits, 153, Kneller … Baronet pinxt …, i.e. after 1715, bust-length oval); another published S. Harding 1802 as bust-length oval. A chalk copy by George Farington c.1775 remains in the Walpole collection.

Painting attributed to Jervas, whole-length standing in viscount’s parliamentary robes with Garter collar, his right hand resting on his coronet on a table to the left, inscribed Charles William Townshend 1720. Audley End. A three-quarter-length version, inscribed … Charles Townshend, one of Her Majesty’s principal Secretarys of State, 1726, by Jervas, formerly at Honingham (Prince Frederick Duleep Singh, Portraits in Norfolk Houses, I, p 289, no.46), is in a private collection, and a copy/version was presented to the Marquess of Townshend 1937.

Painting by Isaac Whood, half-length, wearing Garter badge and ribbon, right hand tucked in coat. Old Schools, Cambridge (J. W. Goodison, Cambridge Portraits, I, 1955, p 25, no.28), purchased 1741. The head derives from the engraved Kneller pattern of c.1715.
Doubtful Portraits
Miniature attributed to Zincke, bust-length oval in viscount’s coronation robes; Royal Collection (R. J. B. Walker, The eighteenth and early nineteenth century Miniatures in the Collection of Her Majesty the Queen, 1992, no.69).
An engraving by J. Smith (J. Chaloner Smith, British Mezzotinto Portraits, 255) after Kneller, sometimes said to show Townshend as a boy, probably shows one of his children (cf. Kneller’s Two Sons of Viscount Townshend, illus. A. Moore, Family and Friends, A Regional Survey of British Portraiture, exhibition catalogue, Norfolk Museums Service, 1992, p 105).
