Queen Victoria is probably the most painted and photographed personality in history. Her long reign and the growth of illustrated newspapers and magazines resulted in a flood of popular images, besides a vast number of state and family portraits. No attempt has ever been made to systematize her iconography, or to catalogue the main portrait types. The following iconography cannot pretend to be complete even in this respect, but it is more extensive than any previous listing. Most previous studies have been picture books, reproducing paintings and prints without any documentation or critical appraisal. The largest and most useful are R. R. Holmes, 'The Queen's Pictures', Jubilee Number of the Magazine of Art (1887), Sir Herbert Maxwell, Sixty Years a Queen (1897), Justin McCarthy, Early Portraits of Queen Victoria (1897), the Marquess of Lorne, VRI: Her Life and Empire (1901), and H. and A. Gernsheim, Queen Victoria: a Biography in Word and Picture (1959); these appear in the text below with the abbreviations 'Holmes', 'Maxwell', 'McCarthy', 'Lorne' and 'Gernsheim'. Some of the earlier pictures have been catalogued by O. Millar, The Later Georgian Pictures in the Collection of HM the Queen (1969), 2 vols, who appears as 'Millar'. The date given to groups is usually that of the event depicted, not the date of the finished picture. The following iconography does not include popular prints, sketches (many of these are in the Royal Souvenir Albums at Windsor), unimportant groups, caricatures or photographs, and only a selection of the huge number of statues which were erected indiscriminately throughout the Empire. There are usually several versions and copies of most portrait types, and these have not generally been listed.

All five pictures show Queen Victoria as a young woman, but their exact relationship to one another is not clear. Nos.1-3 are apparently contemporary, nos.4-5 worked up later. The pose of the figure is similar in nos.1-4, but there are differences in details of the costume and headgear. Nos.1-4 also show the same white horse, its foreleg raised in nos.2-4, its head bent in nos.2-3. The horse in no.5 is a chestnut, but its pose is similar to nos.2-4. The same hound appears in nos. 2-4, and the same dog in nos.3-4.

It shows Queen Victoria in the same dress as the 1845 equestrian portrait at Christ's Hospital, Horsham (listed above), and is obviously connected with it, possibly representing a first idea. It was specially finished for the Army and Navy Club.

All five pictures show Queen Victoria as a young woman, but their exact relationship to one another is not clear. Nos.1-3 are apparently contemporary, nos.4-5 worked up later. The pose of the figure is similar in nos.1-4, but there are differences in details of the costume and headgear. Nos.1-4 also show the same white horse, its foreleg raised in nos.2-4, its head bent in nos.2-3. The horse in no.5 is a chestnut, but its pose is similar to nos.2-4. The same hound appears in nos. 2-4, and the same dog in nos.3-4.
