Oil by John Jackson exhibited RA 1814 (613) but only known from the mezzotint by James Ward published 1835; a slight pencil drawing by John Jackson is in the RA library.
Portrait by Edward Hastings exhibited RA 1817 (480) as 'J. Ward Esq'.
Pencil and watercolour drawing self-portrait, head and shoulders profile to left signed and dated: JW. RA. 1821, was exhibited 'British Self-Portraits', Arts Council, 1962 (64) lent by Colonel E. J. S. Ward. An oil of about this date inscribed on the back: James Ward in his studio, by himself. From Mrs Ward's collection, was brought to the NPG in 1977 (colour slide in NPG).
Soft-ground etching, artist unknown, half-length seated with hands crossed and facsimile of signature, was published by J. Pittman, 1 November 1826 probably in The Sporting Magazine.
Self-portrait exhibited RA 1831 (292), possibly NPG 1684.
Drawing by Miss M. Chalon exhibited RA 1833 (864). He also appears in a caricature drawing by J. J. and Alfred Chalon, 'Early Times', a soirée given by James Ward, reproduced in Mrs E. M. Ward's Memoirs of Ninety Tears, 1924, p 8.
Oil by James Ward 'The Family Compact' exhibited British Institution 1834 and with Sabin Galleries 1958, reproduced Connoisseur, CXLVIII, 1958, xlvii; it contains a framed self-portrait, half-length to left holding palette, standing on the floor beside portraits of his wife and mother.
Oil self-portrait, half-length with hand above his head signed and dated 1843, was in Victorian Exhibition 1892 (187) lent by Mrs E. M. Ward.

Pencil drawing by Mulgrave Phipps Jackson, head as an old man with bushy forked beard, was bought by the Savage Club from Jackson's widow and offered to the NPG in 1930.
Monumental high relief tablet by J. H. Foley in Kensal Green Cemetery, 'The Muse of Painting', was engraved by R. A. Artlett for the Art Journal, V, 1866, p 256.
A portrait called James Ward, reproduced in E. Fletcher's Conversations of James Northcote, 1901, p 15 but representing a young man c.1840, appeared frequently at auction 1972-6.
