Regency Portraits Catalogue

Sir Henry Wyndham (1790-1860), Major-General

1795
Oil by Romney at Petworth, 'The Egremont Family' - group of four children and their mother, the eldest boy George Wyndham shooting bats with bow and arrows (Collins Baker, Petworth Collection, 1920, 381).

1797
Oil by Phillips known from an entry in Phillips's Sitter Book: '12 April 1797 Master H. Wyndham small half-length'.

1812
Oil formerly attributed to Beechey at Petworth, three officers looking at a plan of Ciudad Rodrigo (Collins Baker, Petworth Collection, 1920, 685). An alternative possibility is that this picture is the oil by Phillips listed in his Sitter Book page for 1822: 'Omitted in 1812. A large picture of the Portraits of Earl Egremont's three sons for Mr Sockett/Separate heads of the young men were given this year [1822] to Lord Egremont'. The three sons would be George (later Lord Leconfield) in centre with the plan, Henry standing to left, and Charles the youngest caressing dog with collar marked Wyndham. The separate head of Henry is Collins Baker, Petworth Collection, 1920, 556, head and shoulders with moustache inscribed: H. Wyndham 1812.

1814
Oil by Phillips at Petworth, 'The Allied Sovereigns at Petworth, 24 June 1814'.

1830
Marble bust by J. E. Carew at Petworth.

1834-40
Oil by Salter (NPG 3769).

1837
Oil by F. C. Turner, equestrian hunting scene with Lord William Osborne, Sotheby's 28 April 1976 (189).

c.1840
Oil by Clint at Petworth (Collins Baker, Petworth Collection, 1920, 411), mezzotint by T. Lupton and L. Keppel, undated.

Undated
Sketch by C. Wyndham known from a lithograph also by C. Wyndham, half-length vignette published by Colnaghi (example in British Museum).
