Early Georgian Portraits Catalogue

Edward Augustus, Duke of York and Albany (1739-1767), Son of Frederick, Prince of Wales; brother of King George III

This sitter appears with his elder brother afterwards George III and their tutor Francis Ayscough in the group by Richard Wilson (NPG 1165, see Francis Ayscough). Other portraits of York exist particularly in the Royal collection (for which see Sir Oliver Millar, The Tudor Stuart and Early Georgian Pictures in the collection of Her Majesty The Queen, 1963, Sir Oliver Millar, The Later Georgian Pictures in the collection of Her Majesty The Queen, 1969, passim), but as he is not in the Dictionary of National Biography a fuller entry is not given here.

This extended catalogue entry is from the out-of-print National Portrait Gallery collection catalogue: John Kerslake, Early Georgian Portraits, Her Majesty's Stationery Office, 1977, and is as published then. For the most up-to-date details on individual Collection works, we recommend reading the information provided in the Search the Collection results on this website in parallel with this text.
