Wilhelm Cramer (1746-1799), Violinist

Painting by an unknown artist (probably German), seated three-quarter length, playing the violin. Royal College of Music, London; from Christie’s, 19 December 1974, lot 1, and William Hill (violin makers) 1917 (when described as ‘in the style of Gainsborough’). Presumably the portrait of Cramer exhibited Music Loan Exhibition, London, 1904, lent W. E. Hill & Sons (cat., p 228, unrealistically attributed to William Davison, fl.1813-43).
