Henry Francis Lyte (1793-1847), Cleric and hymn writer

c.1830-5
Oil by unknown artist in Art Museum, Montclair, New Jersey, half-length seated in surplice.

before 1831
Miniature by W. S. Lethbridge (d. 1831) in the Maxwell-Lyte family collection.

c.1831
Oil by John King of Dartmouth, painted for the parish of Lower Brixham, Devonshire, of which he was incumbent for 23 years, now in the possession of a descendant in New Jersey (Sir Neville Pearson). It was probably painted shortly after a petition had been presented to the Vicar imploring him not to leave the parish for an easier post in Penzance; the petition, signed by 900 parishioners, together with the MS of Lyte's reply, are among the treasures of All Saints' Church, Brixham, but there is no documentary evidence of the portrait (Basil Skinner, Henry Francis Lyte: Brixham's Poet and Priest, 1974, p 86). Undated mezzotint by G. H. Phillips was dedicated by King to the Lower Brixham parishioners.

c.1846-7
Photograph taken by his son Farnham Lyte shortly before his death in 1847 is in All Saints' Church, Brixham.
