Pencil drawing, 330 x 223mm, signed and inscr. with address lower right, whole-length, standing, profile to right, moustache, no beard, left hand outstretched, right hand holding brushes, wearing knickerbocker suit and coat; untraced; Christie’s, 24 Jan. 2007 (192b).
Sold with two other studies, all described as self-portraits, but all known self-images show Joseph Southall with trim beard and long moustache, unlike this likeness, which more closely resembles that of his close friend Arthur Gaskin (see ‘1909’ above).

1880s
Images in a photograph album (ref. Breeze 1980, p.89) record several mural paintings by Joseph Southall, including one for an unidentified house showing him and Anna with three women (her sisters?) and one, measuring 2337 x 1477mm, for a house near Bewdley depicting ‘Christian at the Palace Beautiful’, where Anna’s likeness was probably used for one of four whole-length female figures (repr. Breeze 1980, p.89), no longer extant. Her image may also have been used for a lost overmantel depicting ‘Humility’ in the Southalls’ home in Edgbaston, seen in a 1930s photograph (repr. Breeze 1980, p.45).
