Sculptor; born 1 March 1847 in Worcester. Pupil of John Henry Foley 1866–74; after the death of Joseph Edgar Boehm in 1890 led the field in official portrait sculpture; numerous busts, statues and civic monuments including the Queen Victoria Memorial, London (1901–11); RA gold medal for sculpture 1869; elected ARA 1883, RA 1891; KCB 1911; died London, 22 August 1922.
Mr Brock is a sculptor in the most complete sense of the term, for his work is always sculpturesque, possessing, as it does a big, broad marble or tone character.… In his portrait work it might be said that there is more of the sitter than of the artist, for in this class, whether statues or busts, he does not allow his fancy to dominate him as in his ideal figures.[1]
