Naval officer; served with distinction in the West Indies 1780-81 and 1790-93; captain 1759; rear-admiral 1787; vice-admiral 1793, admiral June 1795; [1] ‘a zealous and brave officer ... and a faithfully affectionate friend’ (Gentleman's Magazine, 1799).
