Aubrey Vincent Beardsley (1872-1898), Illustrator

Illustrator; born 21 August 1872, in Brighton. Produced brilliant pen-and-ink drawings for process block reproduction; commissions included illustrations for Malory’s Le Morte Darthur (1893), Wilde’s Salome (1894), Pope’s The Rape of the Lock (1895), and a private publication, Lysistrata (1896); art editor of the The Yellow Book (1894–5) and with Arthur Symons produced The Savoy (1896); died of tuberculosis, 16 March 1898, in Menton, aged twenty-five.

I shall never forget my first meeting with Aubrey Beardsley, on February 14th, 1892, at the rooms of Mr Vallance, the well-known disciple and biographer of William Morris. Though prepared for an extraordinary personality, I never expected the youthful apparition which glided into the room. He was shy, nervous and self-conscious, without any of the intellectual assurance and ease so characteristic of him eighteen months later when his success was unquestioned.[1]
