Thomas Beddoes (1760-1808), Physician

Physician, chemist and founder of the 'Pneumatic Institute' at Clifton; he married Maria Edgeworth's sister Anna, one of their children being the poet Thomas Lovell Beddoes.

'... one of the most original men I ever saw - uncommonly short and fat, with little elegance of manners and nothing characteristic externally of genius' (Memoirs of Sir Humphry Davy, pp 65-6).
