Merchant, scholar, and potter; travelled in France and Italy 1753; settled as a merchant in Liverpool 1754, where he helped found the Warrington Academy 1759; a friend of Joseph Priestley, who admired his ‘excellent taste’ and ‘improved understanding’, even though he was ‘but an unbeliever in Christianity’; from 1769 the business partner of Josiah Wedgwood, running the London showroom.
