Regency Portraits Catalogue

Sir Edward Berry, Bt (1768-1831), Rear-Admiral

1797
Miniature by Daniel Orme known from Orme's own stipple engraving published in The Naval Chronicle, XV, 1806; Orme painted his large picture, 'The Surrender of the San Josef at the Battle of St Vincent 14 February 1797', now at Greenwich (30/7) and may have had sittings from Berry after September 1797 when Nelson presented Berry, 'my right hand', to George III at a St James's Palace levée. Berry was married in December and at sea again in the Vanguard in February 1798.

1798-9
Miniature by Grimaldi probably painted shortly after Berry's return to England in December 1798 bearing despatches from the Battle of the Nile; he was knighted on 12 December and an engraving of Grimaldi's miniature by Ridley appeared in The Monthly Mirror 26 December; others were issued by Roberts 29 January 1799 and by Ridley in The European Magazine, 1 March 1799. The miniature itself was exhibited RA 1799 (716) and used again with adjustments to the uniform for Smirke's Naval Victories plate 4 'Victors of the Nile' published by Bowyer 1803. A second copy is listed in the Grimaldi Catalogue no.418. One of these was possibly that lent to the Royal Naval Exhibition Chelsea 1891 (1882) by the Rev E. S. Carpenter.

Portrait by Singleton known from Keating's mezzotint published 1 March 1799 (John Chaloner Smith, British Mezzotint Portraits, 1); Singleton also exhibited a large picture, 'Lord Nelson boarding the Spanish San Josef at Cape St Vincent', at the RA 1799 (114) and possibly also had had sittings from Berry on his return from the Nile.

1815
Oil by Copley (finished by Phillips) in National Maritime Museum, Greenwich (GH 108), three-quarter-length in captain's undress uniform wearing Star of KCB and three medals for the Nile, Trafalgar and San Domingo; apart from Collingwood, Berry was the only naval officer entitled to wear three Gold Medals for commanding ships in naval engagements. A copy by Phillips is also at Greenwich. The entry in Phillips's Sitter Book (MS in NPG library) reads: 'Dec 19 1834/Copy of Adm Sr Ed Berry from a picture begun by the late Mr Copley & find by me'.
