Chemist; FRS, 1809; professor of chemistry, 1812, and later of materia medica, to the Apothecaries' Company; succeeded Davy as professor of chemistry at the Royal Institution, 1813; joint editor of Quarterly Journal of Science and Art, 1825; one of secretaries of Royal Society, 1816-26; published numerous scientific works.
