Francis Egerton, 3rd Duke of Bridgewater (1736-1803), Pioneer of inland waterways

Founder of British inland navigation; succeeded as 3rd and last Duke of Bridgewater 1748; settled at Old Hall, Worsley, Lancs., 1759, devoting his life to the industrial development of his estates; with James Brindley constructed the Worsley-Manchester canal (‘the Bridgewater Canal’), opened in 1761, and the Longford Bridge-Runcorn canal, opened in 1767.
