Naval officer; 2nd son of John, Lord Hervey; married secretly in 1744 Elizabeth Chudleigh (who subsequently and bigamously married the 2nd Duke of Kingston); captain 1747, retiring from active service 1762; lord of the Admiralty 1771-75; rear-admiral 1775, vice-admiral 1778; MP 1757-75; succeeded his brother as 3rd Earl of Bristol 1775.
‘but let it be remembered that his failings were those of a warm temper and unguarded disposition; his virtues were those of a heart formed for everything amiable in private, everything great in public life’ (Constantine, 1st Baron Mulgrave, 1780).
