Judge; KC 1777; appointed puisne judge of the King’s Bench 1778 on the recommendation of Lord Mansfield (whose portrait he owned, see NPG 172); Bt 1790.

‘short of stature, but of handsome features, with a piercing eye and a commanding forehead’ (DNB).

‘Gay, facetious, liberal in his conversation and opinions, he despises the petty prejudices of the day’ (Public Characters of 1798-99).
