Army officer and diplomat; fought under William III in Ireland and The Netherlands; a diligent chief of staff with Marlborough in all his campaigns; major-general 1707; his loyalty brought him into disfavour in 1711-12; envoy extraordinary and minister plenipotentiary to the United Provinces 1707-11 and 1715; MP 1705-14, 1714-16; governor Isle of Wight 1715-d.; created Baron Cadogan and KT 1716; general of all foot forces to the crown 1717; created Earl Cadogan 1718; master general of the ordnance 1722.
