James Craggs the Younger (1686-1721), Secretary of State

Diplomat and Whig politician; 2nd but oldest surviving son of James Craggs the elder; travelled in Europe 1703-04 and 1706; secretary to envoy extraordinary in Spain 1708 (see Stanhope), resident 1708-11, and envoy extraordinary 1708-11; MP 1713-21; secretary at war 1713-18; secretary of state (south) 1718-d.; manager of the legislation that converted the national debt into South Sea stock; d. of smallpox, a month before his father, see James Craggs the elder; a close friend of Pope and Addison, he was generally regarded as being ‘open, generous and well natured’ after spending an extravagant youth.
Both the c.1708 portrait by Kneller and the monument by Guelfi show a mole on his right cheek.
