Shipbuilder; assistant-master shipwright at Woolwich 1660; master shipwright at Harwich 1664 and Portsmouth 1668-1715; by order of the king built two yachts for Louis XIV 1675; Kt. 1675; MP 1678, 1679, 1685; FRS 1681; special commissioner of the Navy 1685-88; wrote A Doctrine of Naval Architecture 1670; Pepys, who greatly helped his career, thought him ‘a very just man, only a little conceited, yet very able in his way’ (1664).
