Painter and printmaker; born 21 November 1883 in London, with twin brother Edward. Raised as orphan in Hampstead; aged 13 exhibited drawings (RA 1897) and began printmaking; Eight Proof Etchings of birds and animals (1898); Pictures from Birdland (1899); remarkable joint prints with Edward 1898–1906; illustrations for Kipling’s Jungle Book (publ. 1903); elected associate, Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers1905; committed suicide 9 April 1908, at Inglewood Road, Hampstead.

…just two fresh, frank, straightforward English boys, as shy and modest as English boys usually are and ought to be, possessing unlimited faith in their own powers, yet in no way exaggerating to themselves the excellence of their craftsmen’s ability or the limits of their own genius. [1]
