William Cavendish, 2nd Duke of Devonshire (1672-1729), Whig leader

Politician and connoisseur, member of the Kit-Cat Club; sty. Lord Cavendish 1684-94; Marquess of Hartington 1694-1707; succeeded his father as 2nd Duke 1707; colonel of horse 1688-90; travelled in Europe 1690-91; served as a volunteer in Flanders 1692; an active MP 1695-1701, 1702, 1702-1707; KG 1710; lord steward 1707-10 and 1714-16, and lord President of the council 1716-17 and 1725-d.; he acquired an outstanding collection of old master drawings (many remain at Chatsworth).

‘makes a great figure in his Person, of a Brown Complexion, taller than a middle Stature; not Forty Years old’ (J. Macky, Characters of the Court of Great Britain, 1733).
