Early Georgian Portraits Catalogue

Robert Dodsley (1703-1764), Poet, dramatist and bookseller

Author and publisher; while still a footman published, 1729, Servitude, his first poem; on the proceeds of his writings turned bookseller (in Pall Mall) and playwright, 1735; Select Collection of Old Plays, his best known work, appeared 1744; published the works of Pope, Young, Akenside, Johnson and Goldsmith; founded, 1758, The Annual Register; his Select Fables, 1761, included narrative poems by his friend William Shenstone (q.v.).
