Later Stuart Portraits Catalogue

Tregonwell Frampton (1641-1727), Known as 'Father of the turf'

‘Father of the Turf’; a successful but somewhat unscrupulous racehorse trainer, one of the first commoners to run horses at Newmarket; keeper of the Royal running horses by 1695, a salaried post he retained until death.

‘his clothes were described as uncouth and old-fashioned. He never changed his style of dress, and would turn up at court dressed in his normal clothes enquiring in the most familiar manner of the king or queen’ (Oxford Dictionary of National Biography).
