Mid-Georgian Portraits Catalogue

David Garrick (1717-1779), Actor, playwright and theatre manager

Actor, playwright, producer; came to fame with his Richard III at Goodman’s Fields 1741; joint patentee of Drury Lane in 1747; ‘celebrated men ... have had their applause at a distance; but Garrick had it dashed in his face, sounded in his ears, and went home every night with the plaudits of a thousand in his cranium’ (Boswell, III, p 263).
