Animal painter, younger brother of William Gilpin; studied under Samuel Scott 1749-56 and later patronised by the Duke of Cumberland; exhibited Society of Artists, London, 1762-83, RA 1786-1807; ARA 1795, RA 1797.

‘[a] cripple below - [he] wheels about very easy & cheerful, social & likes to tell stories and tells them well ... always wakes abt 3 in morning & eats apple, piece of bread &c. which removed irritation’ (Joseph Farington, 1799).
