Posthumous
Death-mask by Garrard: 'he had a mask taken from his face; and from that mask Mr Garrard, the animal-painter, intends forming a bust' (The Gentleman’s Magazine, February 1803, p 188); a mask turned up in 1935 but was thrown away owing to a mishap; the bust was in the sale of Garrard's effects in 1826 (68) but is at present unlocated (Thomas Girtin and David Loshak, The Art of Thomas Girtin, 1954, p 220).
Garrard's bust was probably the basis for Onslow Ford's bust of Girtin on the façade of Royal Society of Painters in Water Colours in Piccadilly.
