Mid-Georgian Portraits Catalogue

James Granger (1723-1776), Biographer and print collector

Biographer, iconomaniac; vicar of Shiplake, Oxford, 1746-76; compiled the Biographical History of England 1769 and ultimately, according to Walpole, drowned ‘his taste for portraits in the ocean of biography’.

‘He was a perfectly well bred worthy man, possess’d of great talents and a clear understanding, which never failed to enliven those who were in company with him’ (Dr Philip Hayes, post 1776).

This extended catalogue entry is from the out-of-print National Portrait Gallery collection catalogue: John Ingamells, National Portrait Gallery: Mid-Georgian Portraits 1760-1790, National Portrait Gallery, 2004, and is as published then.
