Writer and soldier, from co. Tipperary, grandson of 1st Earl of Abercorn; a Catholic, served with the French army 1667-78; succeeded his brother George as count in the French nobility 1676; in Ireland 1678, 1685-91, becoming governor of Limerick and major-general 1689; fought in Ireland, captured at the Boyne and exiled 1691, joining the court of James II at St Germain-en-Laye; turned to writing, his works including short stories and the Mémoires of his brother-in-law, the Comte de Grammont (English ed. 1714).
