Army officer and courtier; 2nd son of 1st Earl Harcourt; MP 1768-74; colonel 16th Light Dragoons (‘Harcourt’s Black Horse’) 1779, major-general 1782, lieutenant-general 1793 and general 1798; served in Havana 1762, America 1776-77 and Flanders 1793-95; first governor of the Royal Military College at Sandhurst 1801-11; succeeded his brother as 3rd Earl 1809; groom of the bedchamber 1766-1808; GCB and field-marshal 1821.
