Astronomer; son of the astronomer, Sir William Herschel (1738-1822); fellow of St John's College, Cambridge; secretary and later president of the Royal Astronomical Society, 1824-32; discovered and catalogued many double stars and nebulae; described new graphical method of investigating stellar orbits; published several very important and influential books on astronomy; responsible for numerous discoveries and inventions.
