Rowland Hill (1744-1833), Evangelical preacher

Evangelist, 6th son of Sir Rowland Hill, 1st Bt, of Hawkstone Park, Salop.; an unorthodox preacher, ordained 1773, but never attained Anglican priesthood; a chapel was built for him at Wotton, Glos., and another in 1783 in London - the Surrey Chapel, where he was buried; founded the London Missionary Society 1799.

'He was rather above the middle height in stature, and when young was remarkably thin, though wonderfully strong and active. His countenance was expressive of the complexion of his mind, and the play upon his lips and piercing look of his small grey eyes, denoted both intelligence and humour. When between fifty and sixty years of age his fine upright figure, combined with a high-bred, gentleman-like deportment, caused him to be the subject of general admiration’ (Edwin Sidney, 1834).
